Access conditions

General conditions

CYSTAT may release microdata for the sole use of scientific research, provided researchers' applications are approved by its Confidentiality Committee. When applications are approved, microdata may be released after an anonymisation process which ensures no direct identification of the statistical units, while still maintaining usability of the data.

Conditions for non-resident researchers

There are no special conditions in place for non-resident researchers. All applicants (resident or non-resident) are treated the same way.

Conditions for students

Postgraduate students may apply via their supervising professor or the head of their department. A permanent member of the academic staff in an identifiable entity of a higher education institution (such as faculty, school, department, research institute, etc) needs to be the applicant.

Legal framework

The Official Statistics Law of 2021 (Law No. 25(I)/2021).

How much does it cost?

For each approved application, a charge is fixed on the basis of the type and periodicity of the survey and the number of periods requested.

How long does it take to obtain data?

Data can be obtained fairly quickly but it could sometimes take up to a month. It depends primarily on the completeness of the application submitted and whether additional information needs to be provided.

Scientific Use Files (SUF)

According to the Official Statistics Law of 2021 (Law No. 25(I)/2021), when a statistical unit can be identified directly or indirectly, the dataset containing this statistical unit is considered confidential. CYSTAT can give confidential data to researchers as long as the statistical unit is not directly identifiable. Variables such as names, addresses, identity and phone numbers are removed from the dataset.
Applicants have to submit the request form "APPLICATION FOR DATA FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES" and attach thorough information on the project for which microdata are needed, specifically:

  • Description of research project
  • Description of data requested and justification for the need of using
    confidential data
  • Name(s) of the person(s) who will have access to the data
  • Actions to be taken to ensure data security
  • Description of the expected outputs and means of dissemination

Disclaimer

The pages above provide information on microdata disseminated at the national level by the statistical institutes in the European countries and on microdata disseminated by Eurostat.  The pages describe the data and the procedures for requesting access as well as the available types of microdata files (Public Use Files, Scientific Use Files, and Secure Use Files).

This information was initially collected by CASD/GENES for the CIMES database developed for Data without Boundaries project (funded by the 7th Framework Programme, the EU's research funding programme between 2007 and 2013). CIMES stands for Centralising and Integrating Metadata from European Statistics. Various organisations (ADP, CED, CNRS-RĂ©seau Quetelet, FORS, GESIS, RODA, ONS, and UL) contributed to the creation of CIMES by collecting and structuring the metadata for the period of the Data without Boundaries project (2011-2015). In 2021, Eurostat moved the CIMES database to the CROS platform to facilitate updates of countries' information. Eurostat would like to thank all CIMES developers, especially CASD, for sharing the CIMES database and for all efficient collaboration.
