What inspired you to choose an EMOS-labelled master’s programme for your studies?
The main reason I became passionate about statistics is that it is an applied discipline that is versatile and relevant across various fields. I appreciate its flexibility and how it evolves to meet the needs of different sectors, from economics to healthcare, and public policy. The power of statistics lies in its ability to provide insights and drive decisions in a world that is increasingly data-driven.
In addition to this, I have always been fascinated by the role of technology in the advancement of statistics. The increasing use of big data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning in statistical analyses is something I find very exciting. The EMOS programme offers the perfect environment for me to build upon my
academic background and explore the integration of these innovative tools into official statistics, all while working within the context of European statistical institutions like Eurostat. I’m excited by the opportunity to learn how data science is shaping the future of statistics.
During your studies, have you participated in any activities dedicated to EMOS students?
Recently, I had the privilege of attending the 10th European Master in Official Statistics (EMOS) Workshop held in Wiesbaden, Germany, at the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (DESTATIS). The workshop took place from 13-15th November 2024 and was a great opportunity to explore advancements in official statistics and the European Statistical System (ESS). During the event, I participated in group discussions on key topics such as innovation in official statistics, traineeship opportunities, and the integration of data science into the EMOS framework. These conversations were insightful and helped me gain a deeper understanding of the role of new technologies in shaping the future of statistical analysis. Moreover, I had the chance to actively network with professionals, researchers, and students, exchanging best practices and ideas. This experience further strengthened my commitment to pursuing a career in official statistics and was a wonderful opportunity to broaden my professional network.
Have you already completed your EMOS internship?
I have not yet completed my EMOS internship as I am currently a second-year Master's student in Data Science at the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli". However, I have already applied for an internship at ISTAT, the Italian National Statistical Institute, and I will be starting it soon. Although I haven’t yet begun the internship, I have already attended some very insightful seminars, which have further motivated me to pursue this path. These seminars have given me a glimpse into the important work done by national statistical offices in Italy and have reinforced my desire to contribute to official statistics. I am looking forward to applying my skills in a real-world setting and gaining practical experience that will enrich my academic background.
Would you recommend a fellow student to choose the EMOS track at your university?
Yes, I would definitely recommend the EMOS track at my university. The programme provides a wide range of opportunities that can open doors to various career paths in both the public and private sectors. Official statistics is a field that is increasingly in demand, especially as data-driven decision-making becomes more central in today’s society. EMOS offers not only solid academic knowledge but also practical experience, including internships with key institutions such as ISTAT and other national statistical offices, which are highly valued in many sectors. The multidisciplinary approach of the programme equips students with the skills and flexibility to pursue careers in various fields, from health and economics to government institutions. This makes the EMOS track a great choice for anyone interested in applying data science and statistical methods to real-world challenges.
Has your EMOS study experience prepared you for your future academic and career pursuits?
Absolutely. As someone with a strong interest in pursuing a career in health statistics, I believe the EMOS programme is preparing me very well. The combination of statistical theory, practical data analysis skills, and exposure to national statistical systems is giving me the tools I need to work in the healthcare sector. I am particularly interested in using official statistics to improve public health policies, and the EMOS curriculum offers relevant insights and methodologies that are directly applicable to this field. The chance to work with health data during my internship will further solidify my understanding of how statistics can drive meaningful improvements in public health outcomes. Overall, the EMOS programme is aligning perfectly with my career goals, and I feel confident that the experience I am gaining will prepare me to make a significant impact in the field of health statistics.
