Advancing statistical literacy for young people and educators
THE PROJECT
In today’s data-driven world, enhancing statistical literacy has never been more important. This is especially the case in the education sector, where there is significant potential to boost statistical literacy. In line with the European Statistical System (ESS) Innovation Agenda, Eurostat’s project on improving statistical literacy is dedicated to advancing the statistical literacy of both young people and educators.
THE MOTIVATION
As new technologies and sources of information spread, it is increasingly important for everyone to understand data in most fields. Making official statistics easier to grasp is a key step towards improving statistical literacy in society. Recognising the need to improve statistical literacy in the education sector, Eurostat is committed to creating resources that make the learning and understanding of statistics accessible at all levels. Through these efforts, Eurostat aims to equip educators and students alike with the skills necessary to navigate and interpret the data-rich world we live in.
THE METHODOLOGY
The project builds on the work carried out on statistical literacy within the Expert group on dissemination of European statistics, sharing best practices and creating a repository of statistical literacy documents on the Eurostat website.
More specifically, its approach involves:
ensuring a solid range of statistics-based literacy products and increasing their uptake;
engaging with the education community at different academic levels;
adapting statistics-based literacy products to different types of users, depending on their age and education;
sharing good practices, and learning from successes and opportunities;
promoting stock case exercises of challenges and the need for literacy.
FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
The European Statistics Competition is a competition organised by Eurostat and volunteering National Statistical Institutes addressed to secondary education students with the purpose of encouraging students to get familiar with statistics and official statistical sources.

Video on inflation (with subtitles in all EU languages).
