THE PROJECT

Rising to meet the specific needs of the European Statistical System (ESS) and harmonize the statistical knowledge and working experiences of Member States, the European Statistical Training Programme (ESTP) aims at providing high-quality statistics training to staff of the European Statistical System. Through a set of training courses and seminars designed to train those preparing high-quality statistics in Europe, the ESTP aligns with the goals of the ESS Innovation Agenda by responding to the demands of National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) for increased capabilities in new and innovative techniques, technologies, programming languages, and more. Alongside its courses, which focus on harmonized European concepts and legislation and the implementation of statistical practices at national level, the ESTP also plans and implements changes towards more innovative products and processes to help advance the field of statistics.

THE MOTIVATION

As new technologies and sources of information spread, it is increasingly important for everyone to understand data in most fields. Making official statistics easier to grasp is a key step towards improving statistical literacy in society. Recognizing the need to improve statistical literacy in the education sector, Eurostat is committed to creating resources that make the learning and understanding of statistics accessible at all levels. Through these efforts, Eurostat aims to equip staff of the European Statistical System with the skills necessary to navigate and interpret the data-rich world we live in.

THE METHODOLOGY

The ESTP is essential for keeping in line with the professional needs of today. The ESTP programme undergoes regular updates and revisions and spans an extensive array of subjects, including:

Traditional topicsCutting-edge courses
  • methodology,
  • quality,

  • business,
  • economics
  • social statistics
  • new data sources,
  • programming languages,
  • data visualization.

A core component includes a deep dive into artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain technology and modern data analysis techniques, ensuring that Europe’s statistical methodologies are robust against the complexities of the digital age.

  • R for Official Statistics
  • Python in Official Statistics
  • National Accounts

The programme has been created 20 years ago with the understanding that statistics is an ever-changing landscape. The programme also varies the teaching methods of the training courses, embracing a blend of classroom and webinars, which broadens its reach and accessibility. Every year, the ESTP runs about 80 training courses or seminars, each focused on a different statistical subject. The courses are held on-site, online or during webinars and are complemented by the growing collection of e-learning courses offered on the EU Academy platform. Eligibility for the ESTP programme is mainly for employees of NSIs or Other National Authorities from EU Member States, EFTA countries and EU candidate countries. On a case-by-case basis, individuals from other administrations, international organizations or statistical offices outside Europe may also apply.
