Target Group

Newcomers and junior staff in national administration involved in or expected to be involved in statistical reporting to Eurostat.

This training is aimed to statisticians and IT professionals with no or limited knowledge of the subject.

Entry Qualifications
  • Sound command of English. Participants should be able to make short interventions and to actively participate in discussions

  • Basic knowledge of national processes related to compilation of statistical data envisaged to be reported to Eurostat.

Objective(s)
  • To enable participants to understand the basics of the scope, architecture, and features of the reporting mechanisms and related tools for data and metadata exchange 

  • Provide introduction to different tools that Eurostat can provide and uses for data and metadata exchange

  • To gain an insight into basic practical steps when using these tools

  • Understand the basics of key concepts, such as SDMX and SIMS

Contents
  • Introduction and overview of the data/metadata exchange concepts, principles of validation and related process workflows

  • SDMX (Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange) crash course

  • Euro SDMX registry

  • SDMX converter

  • Data mappings in MS Excel

  • EDAMIS (Electronic Data files Administration and Management Information System)

  • Automated structural and content validation; validation in the production systems

  • Metadata and ESS Metadata Handler

  • Quality requirements and accessibility criteria for metadata

Expected Outcome

At the end of the course the participants should have an overview and basic understanding of the architectural patterns for data and metadata exchange as well as basic insights into the tools deployed by Eurostat.

  • Presentations and lectures

  • On-screen demonstrations of activities in the actual versions of the tools

  • “Q&A” session at the end of each block
