The purpose of research is to estimate the range and structure of criminal damage caused by particular types of criminality, independent of any police or other institutional reports. Slovenian survey is part of International Crime Victim Survey, which is a widely extended project that takes an interest to range and structure impairment of conventional criminality. The project goes back to 1989, designed in the frame of United Nation's research plans under the patronage of UNICRI (United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute). Slovenia joined the project in the 1992. Complete international questionnaire and methodology were employed, so that international and national-through-time comparisons were enabled. In Slovene questionnaire some questions were added. All changes were documented and can be found in appendix. "The Victimisation Survey" was first realised in September 1992 by Institute for Criminology at Faculty of Law in Ljubljana. In collaboration with Institute of Social Sciences the survey was carried out on the population of 1000 households from greater area of Ljubljana. In the year 1997 1000 households from Ljubljana and additional 1000 households from other parts in Slovenia were included in the sample. Since 2001, Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia carries out the "Crime Victim Survey". It is part of the National Statistical Research Programme and the data based on survey are official. In 2009, Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia carried out the second Victimisation Survey.
