Abstract

The aim of the Labour Force Surveys (LFS) is to describe the actual employment situation for the population 15–74 years of age (from 2001) and to collect information on trends and developments of the labour marked. These surveys are the empirical basis for the official unemployment figures.

Content and sample representability is from 1995 following the EU-regulation 3711/9, from 2001 the regulation #577/98

LFS are conducted on a monthly basis through telephone interviews with a representative sample of ca 29 500 individuals. Every person is interviewed eight times over eight quarters of two years.

The first Swedish Labour Force Survey was conducted as early as may 1959. Since august 1961 SCB has been responsible for the data collection. In the period 1961-1969 the data were collected and published on a quarterly basis, since 1970 data collection is done on a monthly basis.

From 1995 an annual extended survey is conducted that also collects data on the complete household of the respondent.

Sample size has varied over time:
1963-1969: Increase from ca 6 500 to 12 000 IO.
1970- : 18 000+ IO.
1996- : 17 000 IO / month.
