Abstract

The Austrian Microcensus was first conducted in 1968 and since 2000 has been carried out by Statistics Austria. However microdata for researchers are only available from 2000 onwards. Since 1995 the Austrian Microcensus serves as the data source for the Austrian portion of the EU-LFS. In 2004 the Austrian Microcensus underwent a major revision in it's legal basis, sampling design and question catalogue due to harmonization with EU-regulations.
The Austrian Microcensus is a sample survey and respondents are interviewed either by phone or face to face four times a year. The core of the Microcensus covers questions on employment, unemployment, sociodemographics and housing. Additionally ad-hoc modules are included in surveys on a rotational basis. The Austrian Microcensus is organized as a rotating panel in which a fifth (up to 2004 1/8) of respondents is replaced each quarter.
