Abstract

The Census is a detailed account of everybody who is in the country on census night. The Census gives a comprehensive picture of the social and living conditions of people.

Only a census can provide such complete detail right down to the smallest area and the results are an essential tool for effective policy, planning and decision making purposes.
Information can be used to tell at a community, regional and national level about the composition of the population and to identify the needs and requirements of each group in planning for the provision of services.

Ireland has been conducting Censuses of Population since 1821. This enables to track developments over a long period with considerable accuracy.

The Census takes place generally every five years and counts all the people and households in the country.
