Abstract
The German micro census is an official, representative, annual, one percent sample survey (about 800.000 persons) of the residential population of Germany and its economic activity . It has been conducted since 1957 in western Germany and since 1991 in eastern Germany. Data is available from 1962 onward. The micro census provides information on the structure of the population, the economic and social situation of both the population as a whole and families, the labor market, the occupational structure and education/training of the economically active population. The common annual Labor Force Survey, to be conducted in all countries of the European Union, is integrated in the micro census. At regular intervals, the micro census contains different supplementary questions, the so called supplementary programs e.g. on the journey to work, position of employees within the enterprise, the field of study of university graduates. Compulsory response to most questions is an important factor contributing to a low level of non response.
