Abstract

The Business Census (BC) is a survey of all second and third sector workplaces and businesses throughout Switzerland. Its aim is to collect complete data from all economic production units on economic, social and regional aspects. The BC is used to update the Business and Enterprise Register (BER) and serves as a reference for various statistics.
This survey describes the structure of enterprises, i.e. their economic activity, legal form of organisation, location, financial interests from abroad and financial interests abroad (this latter information is only available for 1995, 2001 and 2005), as well as certain characteristics of the workforce.
