EU-SILC provides the basic source of information used for the calculation of indicators, among others those related to income, poverty and social exclusion, for the EU member states. The set of statistical indicators adopted by the Laeken European Council in December 2001 is supposed to monitor progress in the achievement of the common objectives as put forward by the EU countries for combating poverty and social exclusion.
The set of primary target variables in EU-SILC covers: the main demographic traits of the respondents, their participation in education, assessment of their health status, selected data on deprivation, dwelling conditions, detailed information on the economic activity and a wide range of information about the level and sources of income. Moreover, EU-SILC assumes conducting module surveys on the subjects following current requirements of the authorities of the European Union. In 2011 this supplementary set of questions concerned intergenerational transmission of disadvantages. According to the legislation in force, the survey should collect the data allowing for both the cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. That is why EU-SILC is carried out with the use of the rotational panel method in the four-year cycle.
