Abstract

The European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) is the core European statistic on income, poverty, social exclusion and living conditions. It has been carried out by Statistics Austria since 2003. Since 2004 it is carried out on the basis of European legislation, with all participating countries following directives from Eurostat. However as the EU-SILC is an output harmonized instrument there is considerable freedom on the part of National Statistical Institutes on how they collect data. Since 2004 the EU-SILC is implemented as a rotational panel survey in which a quarter of respondents is replaced every year. A core program is surveyed every year and since 2005 is supplemented by a yearly ad-hoc module, which covers topics such as intergenerational transmission of poverty or housing situation.
