EMOS Participation at the European Big Data Hackathon 2025

Eurostat organized the fifth round of the European Big Data Hackathon from 6 to 11 March 2025 (including the presentation by the winners at the NTTS) in Brussels. 

The purpose of the 2025 hackathon was to foster expertise in integrating Earth Observation data with official statistics for producing innovative ideas for statistical products and tools relevant for the EU policies. 

27 teams competed in this edition of the Hackathon, including the following 7 EMOS teams: 

  • Athens University of Economics and Business

  • University of Bamberg/ University of Rome La Sapienza

  • ENSAI / University of Rennes

  • University of Campania 'Luigi Vanvitelli'

  • Prague University of Economics and Business

  • Complutense University of Madrid/University of Porto

  • Orebro University School of Business

EMOS prize was won by the EMOS team from the Prague University of Economics and Business for the project ‘Ice and Open Water Analysis for Norway Fjord and Finland Lake using Sentinel-1 IW’. Overall, the team finished just below the podium in the overall ranking, securing fourth place out of 27 teams.
