Abstract

The Community Innovation Survey (CIS) is based on innovation statistics, which are part of the EU science and technology statistics. The surveys are carried out every two years by EU Member States and a number of European Statistical System (ESS) member countries. Compiling CIS data is voluntary, which means that different countries are involved in different survey years.

CIS measures innovation in enterprises. The survey, which contains comparable data across countries and over time, is designed to provide information on:

  • the innovativeness of sectors by business type
  • the different types of innovation
  • various aspects of developing an innovation, such as the objectives, sources of information, public funding, innovation expenditure etc.

The survey provides statistics broken down by country, type of innovator, economic activity and size class.
