The Adult Education Survey (AES) is part of the EU Statistics on lifelong learning. The surveys have been carried out by 29 countries in the EU, EFTA and candidate countries between 2005 and 2008. The AES is a pilot exercise, which for the first time proposed a common EU framework including a standard questionnaire, tools and quality reporting. The reference year is set at 2007.

The survey covers participation in education and lifelong learning activities (formal, non-formal and informal learning). All definitions apply to all persons aged 25-64, living in private households.
