Abstract

Household Budget Survey is a survey, regularly executed by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic. It is one of the oldest surveys in the Slovak Republic and it is a part of the social statistics. Data are used for the creation of social policy of the SR Government and for living condition analyses. Essentially, they provide information on household consumption expenditure on goods and services, with considerable details in the categories used; information on income, possession of consumer durable goods and cars; basic information on housing and many demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Acquired data are used for living condition analyses, evaluating social policies, are used in price statistics and national accounts. The households as units are randomly selected from the whole Slovak Republic territory. The participating household needs to be willing to offer information about its budgets. International classification of individual consumption by purpose was applied in the Household Budget Surveys (HBS) as required for HBS by Eurostat (COICOP - HBS). Likewise, household members coding was adapted to Eurostat recommendations. In case of income items, the survey followed Regulation (EC) No 1177/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning Community statistics on income and living conditions (EU–SILC). Until 2003, quota sampling was used. Since 2004, 2-step stratified random sample was applied.
