Abstract

The EU-HBS (European Union – Household Budget Survey) is a survey focusing on the income and expenditure of Belgian households. It is an important tool used, both at Belgian and European level, to present an overview of the population's consumption patterns over the year.
This survey aims to set up a general framework for the production of Community statistics on household consumption, based on cross-sectional data on budget items (amount, composition...) at national and European level.
The survey is also the main source for the Consumer Price Index basket. The list of products and their weights in the basket are extensively reviewed every eight years. The latest review was carried out in 2006 (base year 2004) and the next one will be conducted in 2014 (base year 2012). Every two years the consumer basket is also reviewed within group products (latest review in 2010).
