Abstract

Since the beginning of the 1990s, Cereq has set up a longitudinal investigation scheme focused on the first years into the labour market. It has thus achieved a follow up on the first three years after entry into the labour market of a sample of 27,000 young people representative of the whole generation having completed their education in 1992. It then turned to the '1998 Generation", among which 55,000 young people were interviewed in 2001, and then again in 2003, in 2005 and one last time in 2008. Then Cereq interviewed 10,000 individuals from the 2001 Generation three years after they completed their education. The '2004 Generation ' focuses on 35,000 youth having completed their education in 2004, interviewed 3 years (2007), 5 years (2009) and 7 years (2011) later. Finally, the '2007 Generation' is focused on 25 000 young people who entered the labour market in 2007 and who were interviewed 3 years after, in 2010. Based on a calendar describing month by month the young peoples' situation but also based on more detailed data regarding the first job and the job held after three years on the labour market, this scheme allows not only to analyze the paths of entry into working life but also to differentiate for each generation the structural aspects of insertion from the cyclical ones.
