Abstract

The series "Handicap, disabilities, dependency" contains three kinds of a surveys : the HID-prisons, the HID-institutions and the HID-households surveys

The HID-households surveys is composed of 11 modules: declared handicap and its origin, disabilities observed, socio-familial environment and caregiver characteristics, accessibility of housing facilities, housing conditions, difficulties in travel, education and qualifications, employment status, income, recreation, holidays and voluntary associations participation. The last module is meant for the main caregiver (non professional).

In the HID-institutions, the questioning is focused on describing dependency (washing, dressing, feeding, transportation, mobility, communication, time-space orientation, accessibility, development and adaptation of the building, family and social environment). Occupational situation, skill level, income, bureaucratic situation, elements of the quality of life (recreation, vacation, voluntary association participation) are also described.

The HID-prisons survey is an extension of the two HID-institutions and HID-households surveys. It has the same objective, that is to provide an assessment of the number of individuals handicapped or with disabilities, record the number and the nature of caregivers as well as non fulfilled needs. Considering the rapid turnover of the prison population, the organization of a second wave needed to assess the inward and outward movement of inmates with disabilities was excluded from the outset. As to the rest, modifications of the original questionnaire of the HID-households and HID-institutions were minimal. It is therefore relevant to conduct a strict comparison of the results obtained in prison and in the general population. The HID-prisons questionnaire is formed of 9 modules: "A" Causes and origins of disabilities, "B" Description of disabilities, "C" Social and family environment, "D" Housing facilities access and desires in term of technical assistance, "T" Travel and transportation, "S" Schooling and qualifications, "E" Employment, past or present "R" Income, welfare benefits, legal situation, "G" Sport, perceived Health status. Data collection took place in 32 institutions.
