Nowcasting competitions - introduction

Nowcasting

In the scope of the European Statistics Awards Programme three rounds of nowcasting competitions took place with three distinct competitions in each of them. 

They aimed at discovering promising methodologies and potential external data sources that could, now or in the future, be used to improve the timeliness of key EU indicators.

The rules of the competitions, evaluation and terms of conditions can be found in the files below. 

The first round was focusing on the nowcasting of one economic indicator:

  • Producer prices in industry (domestic market) – PPI
  • Production volume in industry - PVI
  • Number of nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments - Tourism

It was launched in 2022 and concluded in 2023. You can find the results here.

 

The second round was focusing on the nowcasting of one energy indicator:

  • European inland gas consumption statistics - GAS
  • European oil and petroleum product deliveries – OIL
  • European electricity availability statistics - ELECTRICITY

It was launched in 2023 and concluded in 2024. You can find the results here.

 

The third round of was focusing on international trade in goods and its three key indicators: 

  • European International Trade Intra-EU exports
  • European International Trade Extra-EU exports
  • European International Trade Extra-EU imports

It was launched in 2024 and concluded in 2025. You can find the results here.
